Back to [Pre] School 2012

boys clothing, Polo jacket, Gap Kids pink polo shirt and navy shorts, back-to-school shopping

For the last month or so, I’ve been gradually collecting “pieces” for my son Oliver’s back-to-school wardrobe. I’ve found some great stuff  at great prices, items that’ll be sure to keep him warm through fall and into winter. Although, here in Northern California, it can still get pretty hot during the day, so layers are important.

Oliver is three years old, and will be moving up to the Firefly class in his preschool today. My husband and I really like to dress our son as preppy as possible. Also, Ollie is a very active young man, so he needs clothes that are comfortable, can withstand rough and tough play, and that will last for a while. So, while out and about on thrifting adventures, I would be sure to swing by the kid’s section to have a look. Here’s what I ended up with, for a total of less than $25; including the outfit he is wearing above- a Ralph Lauren Polo navy jacket, pink Gap Kids polo shirt and navy Jumping Beans cargo shorts…the Toms shoes were not thrifted 😦

What are important must-haves in your kids’ closets this fall? It was seemingly difficult to find pants that were the right size for Ollie, as he’s pretty tall for his age. Luckily, I have enough shorts and jeans, so I just needed to look for some good shirts, sweaters and jackets.

I find it crazy that many families will go out and spend hundreds of dollars on back-to-school wardrobes from department stores or Target, on top of the long list of school supplies they have to buy. Why not visit your local thrift store, flea market, or garage sale? There are tons of name-brand, almost-new clothes just waiting to be given a second chance. I’m also excited for the HUGE upcoming kid’s consignement sale put on by Just Between Friends,  happening at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds September 6th- 9th. I went last year and got a great haul…Stay tuned for a full report on the event!
